When Rain Becomes a Weapon: Cold Deepens the Genocide in Gaza’s Camps

Gaza Strip, Tuesday: Another harrowing night unfolded for the people of Gaza, battered by relentless rain and fierce winds amidst a suffocating siege and ongoing bombardment. Torrential downpours have flooded hundreds of tents in displacement camps scattered across the Strip, as cries for help echo from families stripped of even the most basic necessities of life.

In areas like Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis Mawasi in the south of Gaza, displaced families endured a night of sheer torment. "Have mercy on us! We're dying from the cold, hunger, and rain!" an elderly woman screamed in desperation, shivering as she tried to shield her grandchildren from the floodwaters seeping into her tattered tent.

The cruel conditions claimed the life of baby Ali Hossam Azzam, who succumbed to the biting cold in a tent devoid of even the simplest source of warmth. His grieving mother, her voice fractured with sorrow, said: "Ali was our hope, but the cold stole my child from my arms... What can we do? We have no home to shelter us, no heater to keep us warm."

"It felt like we were in the middle of the sea," lamented another Palestinian mother, describing the moment rainwater inundated the tent where her children sought refuge. As the fierce winds tore apart parts of the tent, her children awoke in terror, thinking they were drowning in a stormy ocean.

Gaza's Civil Defense received hundreds of distress calls from families desperate for help. Yet, the crippling Israeli blockade has rendered local emergency services nearly powerless to respond adequately. "We are overwhelmed and unable to meet the needs," said a Civil Defense worker. "We lack essential equipment and resources; the situation is catastrophic."

Medical authorities in Gaza have repeatedly issued warnings about the rising death toll among children due to the unforgiving cold and the absence of heating resources. These warnings, however, have largely fallen on deaf ears internationally. Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation continues to tighten its stranglehold on the Strip, transforming life for the displaced into an unending nightmare.

Images of shivering children in waterlogged, torn tents have become the haunting symbol of this ongoing humanitarian crisis. With every drop of rain and every gust of wind, the wounds of Gaza's people deepen, met only by a deafening silence from a world that watches but does not extend a hand to save the surviving children of this besieged land.

This is Gaza, where the siege and bombs are not enough—now even winter has become an accomplice in an unending tragedy.
